Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an English poet, literary critic, philosopher and theologian, with his friend William Wordsworth, founder of the Romantic movement in England and member of Lake Poets. He also shared episodes and collaborated with Charles Lamb, Robert Southey and Charles Lloyd. He wrote poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as a large prose work Biographia Literaria. His critique, especially about William Shakespeare, was influential and he helped bring German idealistic philosophy into the English-speaking culture. Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including "suspension of disbelief". He had a great influence on Ralph Waldo Emerson and American transcendentism. Throughout his adult life, Coleridge experienced crippling episodes of anxiety and depression; It is speculated that he suffered from bipolar disorder, a disease that had not been identified during his life.
