Sir Thomas More
Sir Thomas More, revered in the Catholic Church as St. Thomas More, is a well-known English lawyer, judge, social philosopher, author, politician and Renaissance humanist. He also served Henry VIII as Supreme Chancellor of England from October 1529 until May 1532. He wrote Utopia, published in 1516, describing the political system of an imaginary island nation. Many opposed the Protestant reform, leading debates against theology by Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin and William Tyndale. Many also opposed the separation of Henry VIII from the Catholic Church, the refusal to recognize Henry as the supreme head of the Church of England, and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. After refusing to take the oath of the Supreme, he was convicted of treason and executed. When he was executed, it was said that he had said: "I died as a good servant of the king and first of all of the Lord". Pope Pius XI canonized Add in 1935 as a martyr.
