Vinko Žganec is a Croatian ethnographer. Žganec was born in Vratišinec in Međimurje. He became interested in music from his childhood and recorded his first folk song in 1908. In 1916, he published his first book on Croatian folk songs from the Međimurje. . He then extended his work to include Croats from Bunjevci in Hungary and Croats from Gradišće in Austria. He studied theology and later law, earning a doctorate in law in 1919. The composer and ethnographer Béla Bartók kept close contact with him while collecting folk songs along the border between Hungary. and Croatia. Bartók respects Žganec for both the accuracy of his research and his scoring style. Music began to become his main focus in 1945 when he became head of the Museum of Ethnology in Zagreb. During his research, Žganec has collected, recorded and written more than 19,000 songs, including many Croatian tamburica; these are preserved for use and research by future generations.
