Walter Joseph "Wally" Hickel is an American businessman, real estate developer and politician. He worked as a construction worker and eventually became the owner / operator of a construction company during the Alaskan Territory days. After World War II, Hickel was heavily involved in real estate development, residential construction, shopping malls, and hotels. Hickel entered politics in the 1950s during the Battle for State in Alaska and remained active for the rest of his life. Hickel was Alaska's second governor, beating the incumbent president and the first William A. Egan in 1966. He served as governor until 1969, which ended with resignation after being appointed. Secretary of the United States in President Richard Nixon's Cabinet. Hickel then served full term as governor from 1990 to 1994 under the banner of the Alaska Independence Party.
