William Esco Moerner is an American physicist and chemical physicist, currently studying the physiology and imaging of single molecules. He is credited with making the first optical and spectroscopic discovery of a single molecule in concentrated phases, together with his postdoctoral counterpart, Lothar Kador. Optical research on individual molecules then became a single molecular experiment widely used in chemistry, physics, and biology. In 2014, he received the Nobel Prize in chemistry.
