A. E. Douglass is an American astronomer. He discovered a correlation between tree rings and sunspot cycles, and established dendrochronology, a method of dating wood by analyzing patterns of growth rings. He began exploring the area in 1894 while working at the Lowell Observatory. During this time, he was Percival Lowell's assistant, but was disappointed in him when his experiences made him question the existence of artificial "channels" on Mars and visible cliffs on Venus. The craters of the Moon and Mars are named in his honor.
