Benjamin Harrison V was an American plantation owner and businessman, as well as a legislator in colonial Virginia, following the public service precedent set by his name. He became a founding father of the United States and was also elected governor of Virginia. Harrison worked for three decades at the Virginia House of Burgesses, representing Surry and Charles Counties. He was one of the first patriots to formally oppose the totalitarian measures imposed by King George and the British Parliament on the American colonies that led to the American Revolution. Harrison attached a 1772 petition to the king, asking him to abolish the slave trade. As Virginia's delegate to the Continental Congress and chairman of its Committee of the Whole, Harrison attended and chaired the final debate on the Declaration of Independence. It was he who signed it in 1776
