Elizabeth Griscom Ross, also known as the second and third bride and groom, Ashburn and Claypoole, was an American wrap-man who was credited by relatives in 1870 for making the first flag of the United States, which became Betsy's flag. Ross. Although most historians will refute the story, the Ross family tradition holds that General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and two members of the parliamentary committee - Robert Morris and George Ross - visited Mrs. Ross in 1776. Ms Ross convinced George Washington to change the shapes of the stars in a sketch of a flag which he showed her from six to five proving that it was easier and faster to cut the back flag. However, no other traditional oral or archival evidence has been recorded to support this story about the first flag of the United States. It seems that the story first appeared in the writings of his nephew in the 1870s, without mention or documentation of previous decades.
