Dean George Skelos is a convicted American criminal and former politician from Long Island, New York. As a Republican, Skelos served in the New York State Parliament and then represented the Ninth District in the New York State Senate from 1985 to 2015. He was Senate Majority Leader in 2008 and new from 2011 to 2015. Skelos lost his Senate seat when he was convicted of federal corruption in 2015. In 2017, his sentence was overturned following the US Supreme Court's ruling in the McDonnell v. United States case. His retrial resulted in a second conviction on July 17, 2018. Skelos was sentenced to four years and three months in prison, and he began serving his term in January 2019. In April In 2020, Skelos tested positive for COVID-19 and was released from prison to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest.
