Born in Ireland, Young was an author of poetry. and children's books. She immigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1925 as a temporary visitor and lived in California. For five years she lectured on Celtic mythology at American universities, and in 1931 she engaged in a public controversy over immigration while trying to become a citizen. Young held a chair in Irish mythology and knowledge at the University of California at Berkeley for seven years. At Berkeley, she is known for her colorful and lively personality, giving lectures while wearing a druid's purple robe, recounting mythical creatures like fairies and elves, and praising the benefits of talking with trees.
