Philippe Xavier Christian Ignace Marie Barbarin is a French Catholic bishop, archbishop of Lyon from 2002 to 2020. He was appointed cardinal in 2003. He was indicted in 2017 and sentenced to in 2019 for not reporting sexual abuse allegations by a priest and was sentenced to six months of probation. On June 24, 2019, Barbarin lost his capacity as head of the Archdiocese of Lyon, while remaining archbishop. His conviction was quashed during the appeal on January 30, 2020. Although the conviction was quashed, Pope Francis accepted Barbarin's resignation as Archbishop of Lyon on March 6, 2020
