Robert Carlyle Byrd is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from West Virginia for over 51 years, from 1959 until his death in 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, Byrd was also a United States Representative for six years. , from 1953 to 1959. He remains the United States Senator in the longest-serving office in history; he was the longest-serving member of US Congress until he was overtaken by Representative John Dingell of Michigan. He is the last remaining member of the US Senate to serve in Dwight Eisenhower's presidency, and he is the last remaining member of Congress to serve during Harry S. Truman's presidency. Byrd is also the only West Virginia person to have served in both houses of the state legislature and both houses of Congress. Byrd served in the West Virginia House of Representatives from 1947 to 1950 and in the West Virginia Senate from 1950 to 1952
