She has received two Oscars, six Emmy Awards and an International Press Award. In 2012, the Pakistani government honored Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the country's second highest civilian title, and in the same year, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She holds the record for the first female director to win two Oscars at the age of 37. Obaid-Chinoy was born in 1978 in Karachi. She received her Bachelor of Economics and Government from Smith University and then earned two Masters degrees from Stanford University. She returned to Pakistan and began her filmmaking career with her first film Terror's Children for the New York Times. In 2003 and 2004, she made two award-winning films at Stanford.
