Thomas Phillip "Tip" O'Neill Jr. is an American politician who served as the 47th President of the US House of Representatives from 1977 to 1987, representing northern Boston, Massachusetts, as a Democrat from 1953 to 1987 The only president to serve for five full consecutive conferences, he is the third longest-serving president in US history after Sam Rayburn and Henry Clay on general term and longest in term continuing. Born in North Cambridge, Massachusetts, O'Neill started campaigning at a young age, volunteering to participate in Al Smith's campaign in the 1928 presidential election. After graduating from Boston University, O'Neill won election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he became a staunch supporter of the new Franklin D. Roosevelt Agreement policies. He became President of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1949 and was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1952 in the chair vacated by John F. Kennedy.

From 1977 to 1987, he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a liberal democrat. He also served as House Majority Leader and House Majority Whip throughout his 34 years in Congress.
