Ahmadou Babatoura Ahidjo was a Cameroonian politician who was the first president of Cameroon, holding this position from 1960 to 1982. Ahidjo played a key role in Cameroon's independence from France and rallying parties. The country's French and English speakers. During Ahidjo's tenure, he established a centralized political system. Ahidjo established a one-party state under the Cameroon National Union in 1966. In 1972, Ahidjo abolished the union in favor of a unified state. Ahidjo resigned as president in 1982 and Paul Biya assumed the presidency. It was a surprising decision for the Cameroonian people. Accused of instigating a coup against Biya in 1984, Ahidjo was sentenced to death in absentia, but died of natural causes in 1989.
