Frederick Arthur Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, appointed Hon. Frederick Stanley from 1844 to 1886 and Lord Stanley of Preston from 1886 to 1893, was a Conservative Party politician in Great Britain who served as Minister of Colonies from 1885 to 1886 and was Governor-general of Canada from 1888 to 1893. In good health, he built Stanley House Stables in England and became famous in North America for awarding the Stanley Cup to Canada. Stanley was also one of the early initiators of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
