Rutherford Birchard Hayes is an American politician and lawyer, served as the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881, after serving in the United States House of Representatives and as Governor of the State of Ohio . A fervent lawyer and abolitionist, he defended refugee slaves in legal proceedings in the years leading up to the novel. He negotiated a political agreement to end federal support for reconstruction. A lawyer in Ohio, Hayes was Cincinnati's lawyer from 1858 to 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he abandoned a young political career to join the Union Army as a concerned researcher. Hayes was wounded five times, most seriously at the Battle of South Mountain in 1862. He was known for his bravery in combat and was promoted to Major General. After the war he served in Congress from 1865 to 1867 as a Republican. Hayes left Congress to run for governor of Ohio and was elected for two consecutive terms, from 1868 to 1872 .
