Sandra Kalniete is a Latvian politician, author, diplomat and leader of the independence movement. She was Latvian Foreign Minister from 2002 to 2004 and was European High Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries in 2004. Since 2009 she has been a member of the European Parliament of the People's Party. She is currently a member of the Committee on External Relations and an alternate member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. In addition, she is a member of the delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and deputy member of the delegation of the EU-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. Ukraine and the delegation of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. After being re-elected in 2014, she became Group Vice-President of the European People's Party in the European Parliament.
