Dr. William Edwards Deming is an American engineer, statistician, professor, author, lecturer, and management consultant. Originally trained as an electrical engineer, then specializing in mathematical physics, he helped develop the sampling techniques still used by the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In his book New Economics for Industry, Government, and Education, Deming defended Walter Shewhart's work, including controlling statistical processes, defining operations and what Deming called "the cycle Shewhart ", developed in Plan-Do-check-Act. Deming is best known for his work in Japan after World War II, especially his work with leaders in Japanese industry. This work began in July and August 1950, in Tokyo and at the Hakone Convention Center, when Deming gave a speech on what he called "the quality management of statistical products".
