Les Horvath
Leslie Horvath is an American midfielder and winger who won the Heisman Trophy while playing for Ohio State University in 1944. Horvath was the first Ohio State player to win a Heisman Award, a prize awarded to a football player. The school removed number 22 from him in 2001. Horvath grew up in Parma, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland and became an outstanding high school athlete despite his small size. He entered Ohio in 1939 on a work scholarship, but tried and joined the football team the following year. He played as a substitute for the 1942 team coached by Paul Brown winning the first Ohio State Championship. Horvath graduated that year and transferred to the Ohio State School of Dentistry. However, in 1944, interim Ohio State football coach Carroll Widdoes asked Horvath to join the team, taking advantage of the WWII rule that allowed graduates to be eligible.
