Azmi Bishara
Azmi Bishara is an Arab public intellectual, political philosopher, and author. He is currently Managing Director of the Center for Arab Studies and Policy Studies and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Graduate Studies in Doha. Born in Nazareth, Israel, his political activities began when he founded the National Committee for Arab High School Students in 1974. Later, he formed the Arab Student Union at the University. In 1995, he founded the Balad Party and was elected to the Knesset on its list in 1996. Then he was re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2006. However, after visiting Lebanon and Syria after the war Since Lebanon in 2006, Bishara has been the subject of a criminal investigation on allegations of treason and espionage and is suspected of providing targeted information to Hezbollah. After being stripped of his parliamentary immunity, he fled Israel, denied the allegations and refused to return, saying he would not be given a fair trial.
