James Claude Wright Jr is an American politician who served as the 48th President of the US House of Representatives from 1987 to 1989. He represented Texas' 12th Congressional District as a Democrat. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Wright won election to the Texas House of Representatives after serving in the United States Air Force during World War II. He won the election to Parliament in 1954, representing a district that included his hometown Fort Worth. Wright distinguished himself from many Southern congressmen by refusing to sign the Southern Manifesto 1956. He voted for the Right to Vote Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1960 and 1968, although he voted. against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and 1964. and the 24th Amendment to the US Constitution. He also became a senior member of the House Public Works committee. In 1976, Wright nearly won the election to lead the House Majority.
