Juan Jose Arevalo
Juan José Arévalo Bermejo is a philosophy professor who became the first democratically elected president of Guatemala in 1945. He was elected after a popular uprising against the dictator by the United States Jorge Ubico which sparked the Guatemalan revolution. He remained in office until 1951, surviving 25 coups. He did not participate in the 1951 election, opting instead to cede power to Jacobo Árbenz. As president, he enacted a number of social reform policies, including a rise in minimum wages and a series of literacy programs. He also supervised the drafting of a new constitution in 1945 .
