Minnie Gentry is an American actress. Gentry was born Minnie Lee Watson in Norfolk, Virginia, daughter of Mincie and Taylor Watson. Her family moved to Cleveland as a child, where she began piano lessons at the age of 9 at Phyllis Wheatley Music School. She began performing at the Friendly Hostel Settlement and married Lloyd Gentry in 1932. She subsequently appeared in several plays at the African American Karamu House Theater. On Broadway, Gentry appeared in All God Chillun Got Wings, The Sunshine Boys, Ain, Supposed to Die a Natural Death and Lysistrata. She has also appeared in a number of films, including School Daze, Def by Temptation and Jungle Fever. She played Aunt Bess in the TV series All My Children and Miriam George in Ryan's Hope. She also appeared on The Cosby Show. Gentry's great-grandson is actor Terrence Howard. On May 11, 1993, Gentry died at his home in Manhattan, at the age of 77 years old
