Ray Milland is an American Welsh actor and director. His screen career spanned 1929-1985, and he is best known for his Oscar winning portrayal of an alcoholic writer in Wilder's Billy film The Lost Weekend and also for his roles. As the sophisticated lead man confronts the evil character of John Wayne in Reap the Wild Wind, the husband plotting the murder in Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder and Oliver Barrett III in Love Story. Prior to becoming an actor, Milland served in the British Army's Household Cavalry, becoming a marksman, horse, and proficient airplane pilot. He left the military to pursue an acting career and appeared as a minor in a number of UK productions before securing his first leading role in The Flying Scotsman. This resulted in a nine-month contract with MGM, and he moved to the United States, where he worked as a securities player.
