Ronald David Laing, commonly known as R. D. Laing, is a Scottish psychiatrist who has written extensively on mental illness - especially experience in psychosis. Laing's views on the cause and treatment of psychotic phenomena were influenced by his research into existential philosophy and opposed to chemical methods, and electric shock became the main psychiatric system. Using the feelings expressed by each patient or client as a valid description of life experience instead of just the symptoms of mental illness, Laing sees schizophrenia as a theory, not a truth. Although attached to the public's mind with an antipsychotic illness, he still rejected the mark. Politically, he is considered the thinker of the new left. Laing was played by David Tennant in the 2017 film Mad to Be Normal.
