He holds a majority stake in Sonae SGPS, one of Portugal's largest business groups, also operating in Spain, Greece, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Brazil. Sonae is a leading Portuguese company in the real estate and retail, and also has investments in telecommunications, tourism, venture capital and media. In 2006, Sonae made an unsuccessful hostile attempt to control Portugal Telecom, Portugal's top telecom operator. Azevedo, carpenter and tailor-made son of Marco de Canaveses, graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto and an MBA from Harvard. Azevedo's shares were acquired from the assets of the late banker Afonso Pinto de Magalhães, who, through his bank Banco Pinto de Magalhães, is 100% owned by Sonae.
