Dalton McGuinty
Dalton James Patrick McGuinty Jr is a retired Canadian politician who served as Ontario's 24th premier from 2003 to 2013. He was the first Liberal leader to win two majority governments since Mitchell Hepburn almost 70 years earlier. In 2011, he became the first Liberal prime minister to win a third consecutive term since Oliver Mowat, after his party was re-elected in the provincial election that year. McGuinty was born in Ottawa. He studied science at university, but eventually obtained a law degree and practiced law in Ottawa. His father was a teacher and provincial politician from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, his father suffered a heart attack while clearing snow and died. A provincial election was called later that year and McGuinty decided to run for his father. He was elected as a Liberal Member of the provincial Parliament in an election in which the Liberal government was suddenly defeated by the opposition New Democratic Party of Ontario.
