Edward Irving Koch is an American politician, lawyer, political commentator, film and television critic. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1969 to 1977 and was mayor of New York from 1978 to 1989. Koch is a longtime Democrat who describes himself as "free with sobriety". Author of an ambitious program to renovate social housing during his last years as mayor, he began by cutting spending, taxes and 7,000 employees from the payroll to the city. As a member of Congress and after his tenure as mayor, Koch is a staunch supporter of Israel. He overtook parties to endorse Rudy Giuliani for New York City Hall in 1993, Michael Bloomberg for New York City Hall in 2001, and George W. Bush for President in 2004. A popular figure, Koch drove the New York subway and stood on street corners to greet passers-by with the slogan "How are you?"
