Ernest Davis is an American footballer, a full-back who won the Heisman Trophy in 1961 and was the first African American to accept the award. Davis played varsity rugby for Syracuse University and was the first pick in the 1962 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Cleveland Browns. Davis was diagnosed with leukemia the same year and died soon after at the age of 23, never having played a professional game. It was featured at University Football Fame Hall in 1979 and was the subject of the 2008 film The Express: The Ernie Davis Story.
