Ernest Lee Fletcher is an American doctor and politician. In 1998, he was elected for the first time in three consecutive terms in the US House of Representatives; he resigned in 2003 after being elected as the 60th governor of Kentucky and served until 2007. Prior to joining politics, Fletcher was a family doctor and lay Baptist pastor. He is the second doctor elected as governor of Kentucky; The first was Luke P. Blackburn in 1879. He was a member of the Republican Party. Fletcher graduated from the University of Kentucky and joined the United States Air Force to pursue his dream of becoming an astronaut. He left the Air Force after cutting a budget that reduced flight time and earned a medical degree, hoping to earn a civilian position on a space mission. His poor vision eventually ended these hopes, and he entered private practice as a physician and served as a Baptist chaplain.
