Gary Stanley Becker is an American economist who received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1992. He is professor of economics and sociology at the University of Chicago and a third generation leader of the Chicago School of Economics. Becker received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1992 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007. A 2011 survey of economics professors declared Becker as their home country, their favorite among more than 60 economics, followed by Kenneth Arrow and Robert Solow. Economist Justin Wolfers called him "the most important social scientist of the past 50 years." Becker was one of the first economists to analyze topics that have been studied in sociology, including racism, crime, family organization, and rational dependence.
