During World War II, he was Roosevelt's main diplomatic convenience store and liaison officer with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. He oversaw a $ 50 billion US military loan program in military aid to the Allies. Born in Iowa, Hopkins moved to New York after graduating from Grinnell College. He took a position at the New York Department of Child Welfare and worked for various social work and public health organizations. He was elected president of the National Association of Social Workers in 1923. In 1931, Jesse I. Straus hired Hopkins as the managing director of the New York Interim Emergency Relief Management Agency.
