After contractors hired to renovate the Helmsley, Connecticut home were charged with default, it was investigated and found guilty of evading federal income tax and other crimes in 1989. Although initially sentenced to sixteen years, she was sentenced to only nineteen months and two months under house arrest. During the trial, a former cleaning lady testified that she had heard Helmsley say, “We don't pay taxes; only those who pay little taxes, ”an aphorism attributed to him for the rest of his life.
