Lisa Perez Jackson is an American chemical engineer who served as a director of the United States Environmental Protection Agency from 2009 to 2013. She was the first African American to hold this position. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jackson is a graduate of Tulane University and Princeton University. Shortly after joining EPA as a HR engineer in 1987, she moved to EPA's regional office in New York City, where she spent most of her 16-year career in EPA. In 2002, she joined the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as the Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Enforcement and Assistant Commissioner for Land Use Management. New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine appointed Jackson State environmental commissioner in 2006. Jackson also briefly served as Corzine's chief of staff in late 2008
