A member of the Republican Party, Bono was first elected to Congress in 1998 to replace her late husband, Sonny Bono, who had passed away a few months earlier. She served on the Energy and Commerce Committee and chaired the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee. In 1998, Bono served on the House Judiciary Committee to approve articles impeaching President Bill Clinton. Bono served in Congress until losing his re-election in 2012. In March 2013, Bono became senior vice president of federal affairs consulting firm Faegre Baker Daniels, based in Washington. , DC. In 2018, she founded Bono's political affairs consulting firm Integritas.
