Nikola Žigić is a former Serbian international footballer who once played as the central striker. Žigić was born in Bačka Topola, in the region that followed Yugoslavia SFR. He started playing football at a young age with AIK Bačka Topola and scored 68 goals in 76 first-team matches over a period of three years in the third division of Yugoslav football. Military service brought him to Bar in 2001, where he could continue his scoring career with local second-tier club Mornar. Shortly returned to third place with Kolubara before making his professional transition with first division team Red Star Belgrade in January 2003. He spent time on loan at third place Spartak Subotica before making his debut, Red Star later that year. Despite opinions that a height of 2.02 meters makes him better suited for sports other than football, Žigić finished the season as the Premier League top scorer, Five's domestic player, tournament champion and decisive scorer of the national cup final.
