Sheila Ann Dixon is an American politician who served as the 48th mayor of Baltimore, Maryland. When the former mayor, Martin O'Malley, was sworn in as governor on January 17, 2007, Dixon, the chairman of the Baltimore city council, served the final year of his term. November 2007, she was elected mayor. She was the first African-American woman to become the city council president, the first female mayor of Baltimore, and the third black mayor of Baltimore. On January 9, 2009, Dixon was charged with twelve felonies and misdemeanors, including perjury, theft and misconduct. The allegations stemmed in part from the incident in which she was accused of misappropriating gift cards intended for the poor. On December 1, 2009, the jury returned a "guilty" verdict on a fraudulent embezzlement charge and Dixon was put on probation on the condition that she resigned as mayor as part of a plea agreement. , effective from 4 February 2010.
