Sherman Minton
Sherman "Shay" Minton is a United States Senator from Indiana and later Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Democratic Party. After attending college and law school, Minton served as a captain during World War I, after which he began a career in law and politics. In 1930, after several failed election attempts and as regional leader of the American Legion, he became a public service commissioner under the administration of Indiana Governor Paul V. McNutt. Four years later, Minton was elected to the US Senate. During the campaign, he defended the New Deal law in a series of addresses, in which he proposed not to maintain the US Constitution during the Great Depression. Minton's campaign was denounced by his political opponents, and he received more criticism for a speech called "You can't eat the constitution" speech.
