Wynton Charles Kelly is an American jazz pianist and composer. He is known for his lively, blues-based playing style and is one of the best accompanists in jazz music. He started playing professionally at the age of 12 and was a pianist in the number 1 hit R&B song at 16. Dinah Washington, and member of the orchestra of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. This process was interrupted by two years in the US military, after which Kelly returned to Washington and Gillespie, and played with other leaders. Over the next few years, these included musical instrument artists Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins, as well as music singers Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, and Abbey Lincoln.
