Syama Prasad Mukherjee is an Indian politician, lawyer and scholar who served as Minister of Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's office. After failing with Nehru, opposing the Nehru-Liaquat Treaty, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru's cabinet. With the help of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor organization of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951. He was also president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946. He died in the custody of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1953. He was temporarily diagnosed with a heart attack and was transferred to the hospital, but died a day later. In 2004, Atal Bihari Vajpayee claimed to have been assassinated as part of the "Nehru conspiracy". Since Bharatiya Janata Party is the successor of Bhartiya Jana Sangh, Mukherjee is also considered the founder of Bharatiya Janata Party.

After a falling out with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he created the Nationalist Bharatiya Jana Sangh party in 1951.
