Bronwyn Bishop
Bronwyn Kathleen Bishop is a former Australian politician. She was a member of federal parliament for almost 30 years, the longest serving time for a woman. As a member of the Liberal Party, she served as minister in the Howard government from 1996 to 2001 and chair of the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015. Bishop was born in Sydney and worked as a lawyer before entering politics. She was President of the Free State of New South Wales from 1985 to 1987, then won the Senate election in the 1987 Federal Election. She became the state's second female senator and was the first to be elected by the people. In 1994, Bishop moved to the House of Representatives, winning sub-election for Mackellar's division. She served as shadow minister under John Hewson, Alexander Downer and John Howard. In 1996 Bishop was appointed Minister of Defense Industry, Science and Human Resources in the newly elected Howard government.
