Clarence Everett Lightner is an American politician and barber specialist. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1973 to 1975. He was the first mayor of Raleigh to be elected since 1947 and was the mayor-elect. Was the first African American in a mainly southern white city. in the USA. Lightner was born in 1921 in Raleigh. He attended North Carolina Central College, where he played as a midfielder on the school's football team. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and went on a mission trip during World War II. He then enrolled at the Echols College of Morgue Science, and in 1959 he took control of his father's funeral home, Calvin E. Lightner. He was elected to Raleigh City Council in 1967. During his tenure he chaired a public transport research committee and during one term he served as mayor. In 1973 he made his debut as mayor.
