Phyllis Ayame Whitney is an American writer who has written more than 70 novels. Born in Japan to American parents in 1903, she spent her first years in Asia. A rarity for her genre, she has penned mysteries for the teen and adult market, many of which have bizarre backgrounds. Although she is often described as a gothic novelist, the New York Times magazine even called her the "American-style Gothic Queen," Whitney claims to hate the title. She likes to say that she has written "romantic suspense novels". In 1961, his book The Mystery of the Haunted Pool won the Edgar Award from Mystery Writers of America for best juvenile novel; she cloned this honor in 1964 for The Mystery of the Hidden Hand. In 1988, MWA awarded him a Grand Master Award for all his accomplishments. In 1990, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from an American Romantic Writer. Whitney died of pneumonia at the age of 104 on February 8, 2008.
