He has pioneered modern applications of probability theory, including exploiting very small correlations to obtain reliable financial returns. Thorp, the author of Beat the Dealer, has mathematically proved that the house's advantage in blackjack can be overcome by counting cards. He also developed and applied efficient hedge fund techniques in financial markets and collaborated with Claude Shannon in creating the first laptop computer. Thorp received his doctorate. in mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1958, and worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1959 to 1961. He was professor of mathematics from 1961 to 1965 at the State University of New Mexico, then joined the University of California Studies, Irvine where he was professor of mathematics from 1965 to 1977 and professor of mathematics and finance from 1977 to 1982 .
