Joseph Jenkins Roberts is an African-American businessman who immigrated to Liberia in 1829, where he became a prominent politician. Elected first and seventh president of Liberia after independence, he was the first African American to rule the country, previously serving as governor between 1841 and 1848. Born free in Norfolk, Virginia Roberts emigrated young with her mother. , brothers and sisters, wife and children of the young colony of West Africa.
