Thomas Edward Perez is an American politician and lawyer who served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from February 2017 to January 2021. Perez was a former assistant attorney general for civil rights and US secretary of labor. Born in Buffalo, New York, Perez is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. He worked as secretary to Judge Zita Weinshienk in Colorado before becoming a federal civil rights attorney at the Department of Justice. He followed with Senator Ted Kennedy and later director of the Civil Rights Office at the Department of Health and Human Services during the later years of the Clinton administration. Perez was then elected to the Montgomery County Council in 2002, as its chairman from 2005 until his term ended in 2006 .
