Lawrence Henry Summers is an American economist, former vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank, a senior official in the US Department of the Treasury under the administration of President Clinton and former director of the President's National Economic Council Obama. He is a former rector of Harvard University, where he is currently professor and director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Summers became professor of economics at Harvard University in 1983. He left Harvard in 1991, serving as chief economist at the World Bank from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Summers was appointed Deputy Secretary for International Affairs of the US Treasury Department under the Clinton administration. . In 1995, he was promoted to Deputy Minister of Finance under Robert Rubin's longtime political adviser.
