His conviction in 1964 in an obscenity trial followed by a posthumous amnesty, for the first time in New York State history, by Gov. George Pataki in 2003. Bruce Lee paved the way for comedians from the anti-cultural era. His obscene trial is seen as an important milestone for freedom of expression in the United States. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him third on the list of the 50 best comics of all time.
