Dame Gladys Constance Cooper is an English actress with a seven decade career in theater, film and television. A teenager in the Edwardian comedy and pantomime, she starred in the pre-WWI silent and dramatic roles. She ran the Playhouse Theater from 1917 to 1933, where she played several roles. Beginning in the early 1920s, Cooper has been acclaimed in plays by W. Somerset Maugham and others. During the 1930s, she performed regularly in productions at both London's West End and Broadway. Moving to Hollywood in 1940, Cooper has been successful in a variety of character roles. She has received three Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress, for performances in The Song of Bernadette, My Fair Lady and most importantly Now, Voyager. During the 1950s and 1960s she worked both on stage and on screen, continuing to perform on stage until her senior year.
